Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has been appointed co-chair of a new World Bank Group council focused on addressing an impending jobs crisis in the Global South.
Alongside former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Tharman will lead the High-Level Advisory Council on Jobs until July 2026.
The council will bring together experts from various sectors to develop strategies aimed at creating large-scale employment opportunities, particularly as 1.2 billion young people in the Global South are expected to enter the workforce in the next decade, with only 420 million jobs projected to be available. The council’s initiatives will be piloted and scaled to address this challenge.
Tharman's appointment aligns with his extensive experience in global economic governance. He will perform the role in his personal capacity, following advice from Singapore's Cabinet.
The council's first meeting is scheduled for October 2024 at the World Bank Group-International Monetary Fund annual meetings.
