Last Thursday, Singapore and the European Union (EU) concluded negotiations on the EU-Singapore Digital Trade Agreement (EUSDTA), aimed at enhancing digital connectivity and trade between the two regions.
The agreement will establish clear legal frameworks for digital trade, enabling secure data flows, protecting consumer rights, and preventing unjustified barriers. It prohibits data localization requirements and safeguards against forced technology transfers, facilitating seamless transactions.
This is the EU’s first digital trade pact with an ASEAN country, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing digital economies. The agreement now awaits domestic approvals before its formal signing and implementation.
For Singapore, this marks the fifth such trade pact signed within the past few years, following those with Chile and New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Korea.
