Malaysia is poised to enter the semiconductor design industry, leveraging its strong relationship with China, according to Richard Chang, founder of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation.

Speaking at a recent dialogue, Chang highlighted Malaysia's potential to benefit from technology transfers, similar to how Taiwan advanced through partnerships with the U.S. and Japan. Malaysia, already a significant player in global semiconductor production, could further enhance its position by collaborating with over 1,000 design companies.

Chang also noted that many Chinese private firms, not bound by state regulations, are eager to partner with Malaysia. While establishing a semiconductor design sector requires substantial investment, he advised seeking seed funding from the government or private investors to kickstart the initiative.
