Malaysia and Indonesia are poised to benefit from the burgeoning global demand for data centers, driven by the proliferation of AI technology.
According to DC Byte, ASEAN’s data center capacity could quadruple from 1,677MW in Q1 2024 to 7,589MW by 2028. Malaysia and Indonesia, with strategic locations and supportive policies, are emerging as key players.
Malaysia is noted for its superior infrastructure and favorable government policies, while Indonesia benefits from a tech-savvy population and incentives like tax holidays.
However, there are still many challenges left to address, among them the questions of a reliable power supply, the threat of natural disasters, and significant shortages in skilled labor compared to the likes of Singapore.
Major tech companies like Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google are expected to significantly increase capex to $177 billion in 2024, fueling data center investments.
